OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM VICE CHAIRMAN REEDE REGARDING THE CLOSURE OF THE OFFICE OF THE VICE CHAIRMAN.

October 11, 2007

Dear Friends: It is with a heavy heart that I share with you information relating to my office. On October 10, 2007 the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council made history as it took official action to abolish the Office of the Vice Chairman.

While I still retain the title of Vice Chairman, my office has been dissolved and I have been forced to terminate my senior staff member Beverly Russell along with an additional staff position. Most importantly, this decision was facilitated by a memorandum dated October 8, 2007 concerning Tribal Council salary increases. Through this correspondence, I officially declined the $18,000.00 raise that was passed by the Tribal Council for the Tribal Council. I did however accept these funds into my budget to be designated for much needed community projects.

Unbeknownst to me, my written refusal of the $18.000.00 salary increase was placed on an agenda as an executive session topic during a Special Council meeting held October 10, a meeting in which the Tribal Council knew that I would not be present. The end result of this discussion was two motions to eliminate my office.

As your Vice Chairman, I am obligated to govern with integrity, transparency and in good faith. In the spirit of true leadership I publicly denounce the Tribal Council salary increases and the purchase of the Tribal Council vehicles. Furthermore, I pledge to do my best to continue to work for you without my support staff and budget. Thank you.
